Luzena Fry

Luzena Fry

b: 5 Oct 1837
d: ABT. 1921
Luzena (sometimes spelled "Luzenia" or "Lucenia", but spelled Luzena onher marriage record and mistaken to be Suzanna in one record) lived atthe home of her half-brother, John Clay Frye, during her last years. Shedied during the night, and some of the family thought she had gotten toocold. Jessie Frye Rhodes says she had the flu. Jesse fixes her date ofdeath to be after Quink (Harvey) was born (1920).

Little else was known about Luzena until 1999 when Jesse Rhodes, in aninterview, remembered that Aunt Lu used to get letters from agranddaughter, Evalyn Degolyer, in Indiana. A Social Security DeathRecord for Evalyn was then found in Indiana. Working backward from that(with the help of a kind librarian at Knightstown, Indiana) a record wasfound of a Louisiana Fry (as spelled in her daughter's obituary) whomarried a George Neal and had four children. Her daughter, Mary, was bornin Indiana and married James Noble DeGolyer. They had a daughter,Evalyn. Obituaries have been secured for James, Mary, and Evalyn. Apicture of Miss Mary Neal was discovered in the family collection.Mary's obituary (1936) states that she had a brother, Allen, living inMontana. No other record has been found for him. A daughter, Sarah, islisted as being one year old in the 1880 Indiana census, and in the 1910census in Henry County, Virginia, Luzena reported four children with twostill living.

A marriage bond record has been found in Forsyth County, NC for G. W.Neal and Luzena Fry. The marriage bond is signed by G. W. Neal, with the"W" followed by a notation "his mark" and an "x", indicating that GeorgeNeal made his mark in lieu of his ability to sign his name. The secondsignature appears to be "C. W. L. Neal". It seems that a kinsman ofGeorge shared the one thousand dollar bond with him. The bond is datedNovember 29th, 1866. The license to marry is dated November 19, 1866,but the record of marriage is dated December 3, 1866, probably the dateof celebration or date the marriage was recorded. The Clerk of Court wasN. S. Cook.

Luzena is not listed with the family in Henry County in the 1860 census. She would have been about 23 years old and may have already been livingin North Carolina in or near the home of her grandfather, Allen Preston,at Belews Creek. A marriage record in Stokes County, NC shows thatHeston Preston, who was brother to Luzena's mother, married a Betsy Neil(Neal?). Luzena and George are listed in Indiana in the 1870 census, p.390, Ripley Township. Ages are given as 24 and 25 respectively, whichmust be in error and probably should be 34 for Luzena. Place of birthfor both is given as North Carolina, which would mean that she was bornbefore Isham and Ziza moved to Henry County, but this is not certain forshe gives Virginia as place of birth in the 1880 census.

Where Luzena is buried is not known, nor are the reasons she came back toHenry County in her old age while having a daughter in Indiana. The factthat she and George are missing from the Indiana census of 1900 wouldsuggest that George had died, and Luzena had relocated to Virginia. Sheappears as part of the household of her brother, Jesse, in the1910census, along with Mary Elizabeth Fry, Lena B. Fry, and Norine Fry. Itwas noted that she was a widow who had four children with two stillliving. No other record has been found for a fourth child, and thisrecord indicates that daughter, Sarah, was deceased by 1910. In the 1920census Luzena is listed with her half-brother, John Clay Frye.
