Henry Abel Frye

b: 23 Aug 1861
d: 10 Mar 1910
One can only guess at the origins of Henry's given names. Henry is acommon name in the Frye family and in the community where he was born. His middle name may have been a reference to a minister by the name ofGeorge W. Abel who was Virginia state evangelist for the Christian Churchfrom about 1850 to 1875. Two of his most successful revivals were heldat Horsepasture Christian Church, one in 1861, the year Henry Fry wasborn.

Little is known of Henry's early life. His daughter, Nevarra, thought hemight have been married before he left Virginia. That has not beendetermined, since no record has been found in Henry County nor in PatrickCounty. Henry County records of deeds show that Henry took options tobuy land in 1887-88, but no record shows that he followed through onpurchase. This does suggest that he was still living in Henry County atthat time.

Henry traveled west and evidently was present at the 100 year anniversarycelebration of the Lewis and Clark Expedition in Portland, Oregon in1905. A program for that exposition is in the family collection. Thereare also two pictures of Henry made in Montana, one in Helena and theother in Fort Benton. This was mining country, and there are tales thatHenry went prospecting there and in Alaska. Details are not known, buthe did acquire money to buy property in New York and had knowledge ofmetals sufficient to start his own business.

He married in 1906 in New York City. At the time of his death he ownedthe Frye Steel Hardener Company. He was taken ill with something likepneumonia and died in a few days time. Henry is buried in the Mt. OlivetCemetery at Masteth, Long Island, NY. A picture of his grave shows alarge marker with "Miller" on it and a smaller one which has "Smith""Frye" on it. His wife's second marriage was to a Smith, and her parentswere Millers.

The family collection contains several pictures of Henry and a fold-outpicture postcard of Coney Island, NY which he had mailed to some familymember. At the bottom of the picture he wrote a note saying that he hadbeen to Coney Island and had worn a swim suit similar to those in thepicture.
